Today, August 6th is the Feast of the Transfiguration of the Lord. This commemoration anticipates the glory of heaven, where we shall see God face to face.

Three witnesses chosen by Jesus — Peter, James, and John — saw in Mount Thabor in Israel that our Lord’s face and clothes become dazzling with light, and Moses and Elijah appear.

Moses and Elijah represent the two principal components of the Old Testament: the Law and the Prophets. Moses was the giver of the Law, and Elijah was considered the greatest of the prophets.

A cloud covered Him and a voice from heaven said: “This is my Son, my Chosen; listen to Him!”

On the mountain, the three core disciples saw the glory of God’s Kingdom shining out of Jesus.

They also learn that Jesus himself is the complete Word of God.

The Catechism explains that Christ’s Transfiguration aims at strengthening the apostles’ faith in anticipation of his Passion: the ascent onto the ‘high mountain’ prepares for the ascent to Calvary.
