September is the month of Our Lady of Sorrows, Nuestra Señora de los Dolores, in Spanish. The sorrow of the Blessed Mother was immeasurable. It was surpassed only by her love. Her love was even stronger than death. It made her able to support the cruel death of Jesus Christ. The Stabat Mater — a 13th-century Latin hymn written by Franciscan friar and poet Jacopone da Todi — focused on the sorrow of the Virgin Mary during the crucifixion of Jesus Christ. It proclaimed: "O Mother… make me feel the depth of your sorrow, so that I may weep with you. May I bear in my heart the wounds of Christ; make me share in His Passion and become inebriated by the Cross and Blood of your Son." Let's contemplate Mary's sorrows and ask her for the grace of sharing with her in the Passion of Jesus. This participation should lead us to real compassion, that is, to suffering with Jesus and Mary. The Fathers of the Church said that the sight of Mary at the foot of the Cross makes the lesson of the Cross less hard and less bitter. The Church celebrated the nativity of St. John the Baptist on June 24, and today honors the martyrdom of Christ's precursor and forerunner. Besides our Lord and our Lady, John the Baptist is the only one whose birth and death are thus celebrated. Today's Gospel relates the circumstances of his execution. He had the courage to blame Herod to his face for the scandal of his illegal union with his sister-in-law Herodias, whose husband was still alive. The blessed John suffered imprisonment and martyrdom as a witness to our Redeemer. John shed his blood for the truth of Christ. Today, August 28, the Catholic Church honors St. Augustine, one of the most influential theologians in the history of the Catholic Church. Born in the town of Thagaste (now Souk-Ahras in modern Algeria), Augustine lived a dissolute life of sin up until his conversion — written in the autobiographical brilliant book of Confessions. He also wrote The City of God. His mother, Saint Monica's tears and intense prayers, along with the sermons of Saint Ambrose, the bishop and Doctor of the Church, inspired him to embrace the truth of Christ. On a visit to Hippo, Augustine was proclaimed priest and then Bishop against his will. He later accepted it as the will of God and spent the rest of his life as the pastor of this North African town. Today, we celebrate memorial of St. Monica, which is superseded by the Sunday liturgy. St. Monica (333-387), the mother of St. Augustine, was a Christian, but her husband Patricius was a pagan. Monica's virtues and prayers, converted him, and he was baptized a year before his death. Monica's tears and prayers for his son son were incessant as well. She had the joy of witnessing St. Ambrose baptize Augustine in 387. St. Monica died in Ostia, near Rome, as she and her son gazed at the sea and discoursed about the joys of the blessed. Today is also the feast of the Seven Joys of the Blessed Virgin Mary, the Franciscan Crown, celebrated on August 27 by most Franciscans, and on the 26th by the Conventuals.
