We remember today St. Thomas More, Chancellor of England and saint of God beheaded in the Tower of London in 1535. Thomas More was an intensely spiritual man, literary scholar, eminent lawyer, gentleman, and father of four children. Few saints are more relevant to our time. We honor his life and martyrdom. Thomas More refused to approve King Henry VIII's divorce and remarriage and establishment of the Church of England, breaking with Rome and denying the Pope as the head. He decided not to support the King's divorce from Catherine of Aragon in order to marry Anne Boleyn. Nor he didn't acknowledge Henry as the supreme head of the Church in England. His belief that no lay ruler has jurisdiction over the church of Christ cost Thomas More his earthly life. He did not compromise his moral values in order to please the King! Four hundred years later, in 1935, Thomas More was canonized as a saint. In 2000, Pope John Paul II named him patron of statesmen and political leaders. Today, on the Friday after the Second Sunday of Pentecost, the universal Church celebrates the Solemnity of the Most Sacred Heart of Jesus. This powerful devotion points to the Sacred Heart as the fountain from which God’s love pours into our lives. It highlights Jesus’ infinite love for each of us during his life, Passion, and death on the Cross. It’s the fullness of love poured into the world. In the late 17th century, a cloistered French nun, St. Marguerite Marie Alacoque, received several private revelations of the Sacred Heart. Benedict XVI wrote in 2006: “By encouraging devotion to the Heart of Jesus, believers open themselves to the mystery of God and of his love and to allow themselves to be transformed by it.” The Catechism of the Catholic Church stresses, “Jesus Christ has loved us all with a human heart. For this reason, the Sacred Heart of Jesus, pierced by our sins and for our salvation (Cf. While we prepare for the feast day of the Most Sacred Heart of Jesus tomorrow, we are invited to reflect on the mystery of forgiveness through the reading in the Gospel today (Mt 5:20-26). "Go first and be reconciled with your brother," Jesus commanded his disciples. To enter the Kingdom of Heaven, we certainly have to reconcile with one another. We must forgive everyone before entering into prayer. Lack of forgiveness blocks the flow of God's grace within us. We do not allow God's power, love, and true life to reach us. And yes, we might feel that we cannot forgive because some injustice has been done to us, and we resent it. As Bishop Barron wrote, "A good cure for this feeling is to kneel before the cross of Jesus." "What do you see there? The innocent Son of God nailed to the cross—the ultimate injustice. Today, on the feast day of Saint Anthony of Padua, we also celebrate the Second Apparition of the Virgin Mary in Fatima, Portugal, in June 13, 1917. In 1208, the Most Holy Virgin Mary appeared to St. Dominic and gave him the Rosary to achieve victory over a raging heresy. Seven centuries later, Our Lady of Fatima, asked the three shepherds children to recite the Rosary daily. She added a prayer for poor sinners after each one of the mysteries: "O my Jesus, forgive us our sins, save us from the fire of hell. Take all souls to heaven, especially those who are most in need." In the apparition of June 13, Our Lady spoke for the first time about her Immaculate Heart. She said to Lucia: "Jesus wishes you to make me known and loved on earth. He wishes also for you to establish devotion in the world to my Immaculate Heart.” "I will be with you always, and my Immaculate Heart will be your comfort and the way which will lead you to God." Years later, Lucia saw in a vision that in front of the palm of Our Lady's right hand was a heart encircled surrounded with thorns with which ungrateful men pierce and offend Her at every moment by blasphemies, ingratitude, and sins.
