Today, on Palm Sunday of the Lord's Passion, we commemorate Christ's triumphal entrance into Jerusalem to complete his work as our Messiah: to suffer, die, and rise again. It's the celebration of our Lord's paschal mystery after Lent's five weeks of preparation through works of charity and self-sacrifice. At that time, a huge crowd assembled put their cloaks or branches on the ground, and waved palm branches, acclaiming Christ as the King of Israel, the Son of David. On today's solemn Mass, there is a special entrance at the beginning. We wave our palm branches and sing as the priest enters the church: Hosanna to the Son of David, the King of Israel. The gospel reading presents the entrance into Jerusalem (Matt 21:1-11; Mark 11:1-10; John 12:12-16; Luke 19:28-40). The priest, wearing red vestments, explains the solemnity of Holy Week and invites us to take full part in the celebration. The palms distributed at Mass are blessed, so they are sacramentals. We unite with Christ in his Sorrowful Passion and suffering on the cross, so may we share his resurrection and new, perfected life in Heaven with the Communion of Saints. Ave Maria! This fifth Sunday of Lent is the final Sunday of Lent before the beginning of Holy Week. When parishioners go to Mass today, they will see that their church might have covered crosses and images. They will remain covered until the end of the Celebration of the Lord’s Passion on Good Friday. And today, the Catholic Church invites us to turn our attention to the reality of the painful human experience of the death of a loved one. For believers, death on this earth is a transition into a more perfect life. In the Gospel, we hear the great miracle of Jesus’s gift of life to his friend Lazarus when He raised him from the dead (John 11:1-45). Jesus said, "I am the resurrection and the life; whoever believes in me, even if he dies, will live, and everyone who lives and believes in me will never die." In the raising of Lazarus, we witness Jesus’s divinity and we also see his human side weeping for his friend. Lazarus became a sign of hope and conversion. Ave Maria! It was at the hour of midnight when the Most Holy Mary was alone and absorbed in prayer that the Archangel Gabriel appeared before her. The Archangel asked her, in the name of the Blessed Trinity, to consent to become the Mother of God. Mary bowed and gave her fiat — 'be it done’ — by saying to the heavenly messenger: "Behold the handmaid of the Lord: be it done to me according to thy word." As so many fathers of the Church remarked, the obedience of Mary, the second Eve, repaired the disobedience of the first Eve. The eternal Son of God began His human life in the chaste womb of Mary.
