Today, we celebrate the memorial of St. Nicholas of Myra, a 4th-century bishop born in Asia Minor (modern-day Turkey), one of the most popular saints honored in the Western world, and known as Saint Claus in the U.S. But the story of Saint Nicholas came to America in a distorted fashion, brought by the Dutch Protestants. Popular legends portrayed St. Nicholas as a North Pole jolly magician and a wonder worker who brings happiness to small children. Our present-day conception of Santa Claus has grown from this version, boosted by the marketing of Coca-Cola and other big corporations. As a result of it, the memory of St. Nicholas or St. Claus is associated with a jolly, white-bearded man who captivates children with promises of gifts on Christmas Eve. However, Catholics should think of Nicholas as a saint who practiced both the spiritual and corporal works of mercy. This Sunday, November 27, in addition to the First Sunday of Advent, was the feast of the Miraculous Medal, which represents the coming triumph of the Immaculate Heart of Mary. On November 27, 1830, the Virgin Mary appeared to St. Catherine Laboure in a small chapel in Paris. Our Lady was clothed all in white. She was standing on the earth. Under one of her feet was the head of a green serpent, representing Satan. In her hands, she held a golden ball surmounted by a cross, which represented the world. From rings on her fingers, rays as symbols of graces were emitted. These rays were shed upon those who ask for them. The Holy Virgin asked St. Catherine Labouré, a Daughter of Charity of St. Vincent de Paul, to have a medal struck after this model. And promised: “All who wear the medal will receive great graces; they should wear it around the neck. Graces will abound for those who wear it with confidence.” Since then, so many miracles have occurred for those who wore the medal. Ave Maria!
