Through the parable of the persistent widow (Luke 18:1–8) — that we read last Saturday — Jesus Christ exhorts us to pray with persistence. This command is everywhere in the Old and New Testaments. The Son of God’s teaching is clear: "Knock and the door shall be opened to you; seek and you will find; ask and it will be given to you." Why persistence is so critical? The Lord wants to be sure — and we want to be sure of what we ask. Things shouldn’t come up too easily. Moreover, many followers of the Law of the Prophets believed that the end of earthly life was the end of our human existence. Only a few passages sensed that the Resurrection was part of the history of salvation. Yesterday, in the first Sunday reading, in the book of Maccabees (2 Mc 7:1-2, 9-14) we heard about it. Heroically, seven brothers accepted martyrdom. One of the brothers, speaking for the others, said: “You are depriving us of this present life, but the King of the world will raise us up to live again forever." And he added, in a serious warning to the wicked who tortured and maltreated them, "It is my choice to die at the hands of men with the hope God gives of being raised up by him; but for you, there will be no resurrection to life." He is not a God of the dead. With Christ, we all have been resurrected, as we learn in the first Glorious Mystery. Our earthly valley of tears will soon go away. Eternal joy awaits us. But what about loving those who offend and insult us? Dismissing them, arguing that they reject the faith and the love of God, is an excuse. These folks are suffering immensely and they deserve our help. In truth, anyone who doesn’t live for the Divinity and for helping their neighbors is a really damaged person. To them, we need to show our merciful love, simply by behaving as witnesses of Jesus and Mary and without expecting anything in return, nor even a small gesture of gratitude, nor a thankful word. If there is an opportunity for dialogue — and they open themselves for a conversation, — we’d need to stay strong and calm, explaining to these troubling people that sin damages all of us.
