On August 25, 2021, Maria Blanca, my wife, entered the hospital for a bone marrow transplant. She had a donor, and we were told that within a month or so she would be back home. The way she said goodbye made us uncomfortable. She accessed a tiny, isolated room for cancer patients, where she installed a little altar to pray. Immediately after, Maria Blanca told us that she was putting herself at the feet of the Cross, accepting the Divine Will. None of us thought that that’d be our last time seeing her standing up. Now, we envision her in Heaven, totally cured, with the Communion of Saints, enjoying the beatific view of the face of Jesus Christ. Ave Maria! Yesterday, we reflected upon the great value of silence for our faith, following the message of Our Lady of Knock. The Blessed Virgin Mary remained in silence in this apparition, showing the silence in the face of mystery. There is certainly a lot of noise in our society. We need silent prayer to understand the mystery of the Lamb of God sacrificed for the salvation of humanity. It's the merciful Father who invites us to a trusting abandonment in His Divine Will. Today, along with the people of Ireland, we celebrate the Memorial of Our Lady of Knock. In 1879, in the village of Knock in County Mayo in the west of Ireland, Our Lady, St. Joseph, St. John the Apostle, a Lamb and a Cross appeared on an altar on the wall of the parish church [image below], and to some villagers. For two hours, a crowd gathered to adore the apparition and to pray the rosary. Despite the rainstorm, no one got wet. Unlike in most other Marian apparitions, the Virgin Mary was silent the entire time. As Pope Francis said, the message from Knock is the great value of silence for our faith. Today, the Knock Shrine is an international Marian and Eucharistic shrine. The Vatican's designation was after miraculous healing involving Eucharistic adoration at Knock Shrine in 1989. Ave Maria! Our faith has to be constantly tested through trials and challenges. This test produces steadfastness, and it leads us to joy and perfection. As St. James says in his first letter, "let steadfastness has its full effect, that you may be perfect and complete, lacking in nothing." But this goal of perfection cannot be achieved only with human effort. We need the help of God, and therefore, we need to ask in faith, with no doubting. And when we remain faithful under trial and stand the test, we can be sure that, as the Holy Spirit wrote through James wrote, we will receive "the crown of life, which God has promised to those who love him." Today, we celebrate the Solemnity of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary. "The Immaculate Mother of God, the ever-virgin Mary, having completed the course of her earthly life, was assumed body and soul into heaven." With these words, in 1950, Pope Pius XII proclaimed the Assumption of Mary as a dogma — a truth revealed by God. The Ever-Virgin Mary had a life, fullness of grace from the first moment of her existence, untouched by sin. Her Assumption completed God’s work in her: it was not fitting that the flesh that had given life to God should ever undergo corruption. The Assumption is the exaltation of the Mother of the Savior and crowning of her work. The Assumption looks to eternity and gives us hope that we, too, will follow Our Lady when our earthly life is ended. Ave Maria! Jesus, I Trust In You! + Mikel A. | RosaryNetwork.com, New York
