The story that Jesus tells to the Pharisees (Lk 16:19-31) that we read today in the Gospel, is extremely revealing. There was a rich man who lived sumptuously, enjoying any pleasure of life and ignoring God and the poor, starving neighbors. He died and went to hell, suffering the eternal torment of fire. There, he asked Abraham for relief or at least to warn his five brothers still on earth of the pains of the netherworld. Abraham replied that those relatives should listen to Moses and the prophets. On the other side, we picture a beggar named Lazarus who due to his faith, humility, and patience is now in Heaven in a state of everlasting joy. The outcome is crystal clear: one day, we all will die and our earthly decisions will have endless consequences. Abusing our time on earth rejecting the Truth and behaving accordingly is the worst imaginable deal for everyone. We have to be faithful and fraternally charitable. In 1218, in Spain, the Blessed Virgin appeared in separate visions to St. Peter Nolasco, St. Raymond of Penafort, and James, King of Aragon, asking them to found a religious order dedicated to freeing Christian captives from the barbarous Saracens or Moors. At the time, Saracens or Moors held a great part of Spain. The Mercedarian Order, comprised of knights, produced heroes of charity who collected alms for the ransom of Christians and often gave themselves up in exchange for Christian prisoners. Also, today is the Memorial of Our Lady of Walsingham. This feast day celebrates the shrine in Norfolk, England, which was a popular medieval pilgrimage site. On March 29, 2020, England was rededicated as the “Dowry of Mary” with Our Lady of Walsingham being the central Marian devotion. Ave Maria! While praying before a cross, Padre Pio received the gift of the stigmata. He was the first priest ever to be blessed. He was a much sought-after spiritual advisor, confessor, and intercessor. Thousands flocked to his monastery of San Giovanni Rotundo, which became a point of pilgrimage worldwide. Padre Pio was reportedly able to bi-locate, levitate, heal by touch, and read souls. Yet despite such notoriety, he would often say, "I only want to be a poor friar who prays." He fervently prayed to the Rosary every day.
