Today’s Gospel (Mark 6:14–29) accounts for Herod’s murder of John the Baptist. John is a proto-martyr, anticipating the martyrdom of many Christians. Today, February 6, we are celebrating another martyr who refused to compromise their beliefs. Saint Paul Miki and Companions. In the 16th and 17th centuries, the first to give witness, thousands of Christians in Japan suffered martyrdom. On February 5, 1597, Japanese Jesuit Paul Miki and his companions, including sixteen Japanese laymen, four of whom were boys, gave their lives for Christ. The Shogun Hideyoshi feared that these missionaries represented the vanguard of an impending European conquest. He decided to sacrifice them. He had the ears of the missionaries cut and ordered them to march four hundred miles from Miyako to Nagasaki, with blood streaming down their faces as a sign of their disgrace. In Nagasaki, each was bound to a cross and killed with a lance. The Japanese martyrs were canonized in 1862. Ave Maria! Come, Holy Spirit, come! To Jesus through Mary! In today’s Gospel (Mark 4:26–34), the parable of the mustard seed is revealed. Christ Jesus said, "To what shall we compare the Kingdom of God, or what parable can we use for it? It is like a mustard seed that, when it is sown in the ground, is the smallest of all the seeds on the earth. But once it is sown, it springs up and becomes the largest of plants and puts forth large branches, so that the birds of the sky can dwell in its shade." God makes very great things starting from the very small in a gradual process, never drawing attention to Himself. At God's prompting, we start doing small things by planting the seed. We take small steps and do not worry about the attention or the praise we attract. The faithful sow the seed and take risks, leaving the rest to the mercy and providence of God. Ave Maria! St. Thomas — whose feast day we celebrated yesterday — said, "It is from the union of the different appetites in man tending towards the same object that peace results." In the Garden of Eden, with man’s virgin nature, there was a harmony that was the divine radiation of original justice. The order was perfect in Adam, and all was perfectly harmonized. But sin came into the world, and all this admirable order was overthrown. Man’s different appetites started to function against each other. The flesh conspired against the spirit, and the spirit against the flesh. And until the order is re-established, peace cannot be in the heart, and we will be separated from Him by an abyss. Today, January 28, the Catholic Church celebrates the Memorial of St. Thomas Aquinas (1225-1274), a genius thinker, philosopher, and theologian, who earned the title of the Angelic Doctor, a designation that, as Pope Benedict XVI said, expresses “the sublimity of his thought and the purity of his life.” Considered the Dominican Order's greatest glory, his Summa Theologiae is a masterly synthesis of faith and reason and the classic text for a comprehensive theological formation. Born in Aquino, Italy, he led a remarkable life of prayer and remained modest, a perfect model of childlike simplicity and goodness. He cherished a tender devotion to St. Agnes, constantly carrying relics of this virgin martyr on his person. He died in 1274, at the age of fifty, in the abbey of Fossa Nuova.
