John wasn't just one more biblical prophet or patriarch of Israel. He was a witness to the light, as he depicted the coming of Jesus Christ. Jesus said that there was no one greater than John (Luke 7:28). He identified himself as "the voice of one crying out the desert". His mission was to "make straight the way of the Lord". John the Baptist was filled with the Holy Spirit while he was in the womb of his mother Saint Elizabeth. Most scholars agree that John baptized Jesus in the Jordan, and some of Jesus' early followers had previously been followers of John. John was sentenced to death and beheaded by Herod Antipas. His death, like that of Jesus, illustrated the old Israel's hostility to God's offer of salvation. He was the start of the Christian era. He came as a witness to the truth. How many times do we say what’s wrong with people or how stupid people are? This habit –an expression of pride– ruins our life and separates us from the Truth. As we read today in the New Testament, Jesus said to his disciples: “Stop judging, that you may not be judged. For as you judge, so will you be judged”. We all are sinners, and we have no right to criticize one another. As Jesus said when the prostitute was about to be stoned, “He that is without sin among you, let him first cast a stone at her.” Friends, before judging someone, let’s put ourselves in his or her shoes, and try to show that person love and mercy. In today’s Sunday reading, Jesus said to the twelve apostles: “Everyone who acknowledges me before others, I will acknowledge before my heavenly Father.” Nothing falls to the ground without the Father’s knowledge. “Even all the hairs of our head are counted.” In other words, if we acknowledge Jesus, we have absolutely nothing to fear. “Do not be afraid,” said Jesus Christ. Fear poisons our consciousness and makes us forget our identity, created with “the image and likeness of God.” We have freely chosen to follow Jesus. Therefore we are one with the One who created the universe. We have no reason no fear. Our lives become dominated by fear when we are just thinking of ourselves, and do not place our trust and hope in Jesus and Mary. Our ego spreads the fear, while our faith makes us free.
