Today, February 14, we celebrate the memorials of St. Cyril (827-869), a priest and a philosopher and his brother St. Methodius (826-885), and St. Valentine, Bishop and Martyr of Rome (died c. 269), patron saint of engaged couples, happy marriages, lovers, etc. In ancient Rome, Emperor Claudius issued a decree forbidding marriage, believing that single men would be better soldiers than married men. Valentine defied this decree and urged young lovers to come to him in secret so that he could join them in the sacrament of matrimony. The Emperor had Valentine arrested and attempted to convert him to Roman paganism. In turn, Valentine tried to convert Claudius to Christianity, at which point the Emperor condemned him to death. He was executed on February 14th, 273 AD in Rome. The Martyrology says, "At Rome, on the Flaminian Way, the heavenly birthday of the blessed martyr Valentine, a priest. After performing many miraculous cures and giving much wise counsel he was beaten and beheaded under Claudius Caesar." Today, the First Friday of the month, the Roman Catholic Church commemorates Blessed Pius IX (1792-1878). Pius IX [in the picture] defined the dogma of the Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary on December 8, 1854. He also celebrated the First Vatican Council from 1869 to 1870, representing the dogma of papal infallibility. The Immaculate Conception doctrine reveals that Mary was conceived without original sin from the first moment of her existence. It emphasizes Mary's unique role in salvation history as the pure and sinless mother of Jesus Christ. The papal bull Ineffabilis Deus stated: "We declare, pronounce, and define that the doctrine which holds that the most Blessed Virgin Mary, in the first instance of her conception, by a singular grace and privilege granted by Almighty God, in view of the merits of Jesus Christ, the Savior of the human race, was preserved free from all stain of original sin, is a doctrine revealed by God and therefore to be firmly and constantly believed by all the faithful." In a recent reflection, Pope Francis emphasized how Jesus Christ reveals the ultimate criterion by which all history is judged: love. "Whoever loves lives, whoever hates dies," the pope told pilgrims gathered in St. Peter’s Square on Feb. 2, the feast of the Presentation of the Lord. "God is present among his people; he lives as a man among men." Jesus embodies universal salvation, an awe-inspiring truth emphasizing that God’s redemptive love is fully embodied in one person. Today is also the Memorial of St. Paul Miki, a Japanese Jesuit, and his twenty-five companions (d. 1597), the first East Asian martyrs to be canonized. They were martyred in Nagasaki, Japan, by being raised on crosses and then stabbed with spears. Their executioners were astounded upon seeing their joy at being associated with the Passion of Christ. Today, the Catholic Church celebrates the Memorial of St. Agatha (d. 250), who died to defend her purity, in Catania, Sicily. Since ancient times, Agatha’s virginal martyrdom has been commemorated on this date. Her purity and innocence commended her to young women in the Middle Ages, who frequently invoked her alongside the virgins Agnes and Lucy. In his 1994 letter to children, Saint John Paul II offered her as a saintly example for young people. After Quintanus, the governor of Sicily, tried in vain to force her to consent to sin, she was imprisoned. Quintanus turned from sensuality to cruelty and had her breasts cut off, but that night, Agatha was healed by St. Peter. She was then rolled over sharp stones and burning coals and finally taken to prison, where she died while praying. St. Agatha is one of seven women martyrs listed in the Roman Canon of the Mass: Saints Felicity, Perpetual, Agatha, Lucy, Agnes, Cecilia, and Anastasia. Ave Maria! Jesus, I Trust In You!
