He was also in the Transfiguration and was one of the first witnesses to the Resurrection. To him, Jesus entrusted his Mother. John was honored as one of the three pillars of the Church. After the persecution of Herod Agrippa, in which his brother was beheaded, John traveled to Asia Minor, where he composed his Gospel and epistles. John the Baptist would be the priest out in the desert, who'd be in charge of purifying the temple. The baptism of John would be a cleansing of the temple through repentance. He'd prepare the path of the Lord, "the Lamb of God." Christ was born to die on the Cross. Jonh the Baptist announced that the one to be sacrificed had arrived. He came out of a long line of characters: saints, sinners, cheats, prostitutes, murderers, poets, kings, insiders, and outsiders. All leading to the Christ." Look at King David, a great figure, the king who united the nation, but also an adulterer and a murderer. Seeing that God had all kinds of human ancestors is good news for us. It means God brought Christ to birth, even in people like us.
