On July 13th, 1917, the Immaculate Mother appeared to the three shepherd children – Lucia, Francisco, and Jacinta at Cova da Iria in Fatima, Portugal. She showed them a vision of Hell and revealed that God wishes to be a great devotion to Mary’s Immaculate Heart to save souls from Hell. The three children were taught by Our Lady to pray the sacrifice prayer, especially when making sacrifices: “O Jesus, it is for the love of You, for the conversion of sinners, and in reparation for the sins committed against the Immaculate Heart of Mary.” While saying the last words of this prayer, Our Lady opened her hands and beheld the Vision of Hell, which, according to Lucia, they could have died in fright if not for Our Lady's splendor, radiance, and beauty. Today, the Catholic Church celebrates the Memorial of St. Maria Goretti (1890-1902), Virgin and Martyr. She was the daughter of a poor peasant family in Italy, well known to her neighbors for her cheerfulness and piety. In 1902, when she was twelve, she was a victim of assault: she was stabbed to death, preferring to die rather than be raped and lose her virginity. She surrendered herself to God with splendid courage, achieving Christian moral perfection. Her mother was present at her canonization in 1950, the first time a parent was present for their child's canonization. In the life of Maria Goretti, we can see the worth of heaven. Parents can learn from Maria Goretti how to raise their God-given children in virtue, courage, and holiness. This young saint's feast day can be a launching point for teaching our children about purity, chastity, and modesty. Sex education should be taught by the parents with a Catholic approach. Young girls can use St. Maria as a model. When our children are tested, God's grace will support them. Then, we hear what happened after Matthew’s conversion: “While he was at the table in his house, many tax collectors and sinners came and sat with Jesus and his disciples. The Pharisees saw this and said to his disciples, "Why does your teacher eat with tax collectors and sinners?" He heard this and said, "Those who are well do not need a physician, but the sick do. Go and learn the meaning of the words, I desire mercy, not sacrifice. By his doubt and touching the sacred wounds, the apostle became a witness to the truth of the resurrection. “Thomas touched and cried out: My Lord and my God! And Jesus told him: Because you have seen Me, Thomas, you have believed.” “Thomas saw the Man Christ and acknowledged His divinity with the words.” Pope Benedict XVI said: "The Apostle Thomas’ case is important to us for at least three reasons. First, because it comforts us in our insecurity; second, because it shows us that every doubt can lead to an outcome brighter than any uncertainty; and, lastly, because the words that Jesus addressed to him remind us of the true meaning of mature faith and encourage us to persevere, despite the difficulty, along our journey of adhesion to him."
