Lord Jesus wants us to be merciful and charitable rather than being caught in rituals. In the Gospel (Mt 12:1-8), today we hear His words: "I say to you, something greater than the temple is here. If you knew what this meant, I desire mercy, not sacrifice, you would not have condemned these innocent men. For the Son of Man is Lord of the Sabbath." Pharisees were portraying Jesus as violating the Jewish law by curing on the Sabbath and allowing the disciples to eat on this day after they were picking grain. One of the saints we honor today is St. Veronica, featured in the Sixth Station of the Cross during the Sorrowful Mystery of Jesus carrying the Cross. The station is called "Veronica Wipes the Face of Jesus." It depicts a woman from Jerusalem named Veronica who, in an act of kindness and charity, offers Jesus her veil to wipe his face while he falls beneath the weight of the cross. According to tradition, when St. Veronica was so moved by pity, she pushed through the crowd past the Roman soldiers to reach Jesus. She used her veil (sometimes called the "sudarium") to wipe the blood and sweat from His face. The veil was imprinted with an image of Christ's face. St. Veronica is believed to be buried in the tomb in Soulac or the church of St. Seurin in Bordeaux, France. Her veil, also called the "Sudarium," is kept at St. Peter's Basilica in the Vatican in Rome. The relic is displayed annually on the 5th Sunday of Lent, Passion Sunday. Ave Maria! Today is the Memorial of St. Benedict (480-547), who founded the monastic life, rule, and wisdom in Christianity. St. Benedict's intercession can release our faith. His medal reminds us that we are protected by Christ's power. It's one of the oldest and most honored medals used by Christians. It's also a "devil-chasing medal," as it has power against evil. The reverse side of the medal carries the Vade retro Satana ("Begone, Satan!") formula, which Christians have used to ward off evil since the 15th century. The formula is sometimes carried as part of the rosary but is also found individually. Catholics are not permitted to perform exorcisms, but they can use the Saint Benedict Medal, holy water, the crucifix, and other sacramentals to ward off evil. The Saint Benedict Medal in the middle of a Celtic Cross is believed to be a powerful tool against evil influences. Go rather to the lost sheep of the house of Israel. As you go, make this proclamation: ‘The Kingdom of heaven is at hand." Note that Jesus is not offering a set of ideas or theological teachings. He is offering himself. "God is the one who makes us from nothing. To live in sin is to live outside of the creative power of God, to pretend that we can make ourselves," Bishop Barron writes. Then he said to his disciples, "The harvest is abundant but the laborers are few; so ask the master of the harvest to send out laborers for his harvest." The Holy Trinity needs evangelists who proclaim Christ's victory over sin and death and demonstrate that divine love is greater than our enemies. It means that Christ must be the center of our life.
