Today, the Catholic Church celebrates the Feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe. Our Lady appeared to an Indian convert named Juan Diego on December 9, 1531, in a miracle that changed history. She left a marvelous portrait of herself on the mantle of Juan Diego. And She told him: "Am I not here who am your Mother? Are you not under my shadow and protection? Am I not the fountain of your joy? Do not grieve nor be disturbed by anything." This miraculous image has proved to be ageless and is kept in the shrine built in her honor, the Basilica of Our Lady of Guadalupe. Within ten years of the appearance of Our Lady of Guadalupe, the entire Mexican people, nine million, converted to Christianity. The powers of the world — dominated by darkness — sentenced the Author of Life and the Creator of All Things to death on the cross. Today, twenty centuries later, they continue to reject Christ and His followers. In the Western Hemisphere, those secular powers engineer ideologies and false doctrines that, sadly, a vast number of people adopt. The Son of God defeated death and sin with His resurrection. His victory is eternal and His words will never pass away. In yesterday's second reading (Mark 1:1-8), we heard the words written by Mark, who accompanied Peter in his travels until Rome. His opening line “The beginning of the gospel of Jesus Christ the Son of God” is a statement of who is truly the conqueror and messenger of the good news — evangelium or Gospel in Greek. As our journey of conversion continues and we prepare to celebrate the nativity of Christ, on this Second Sunday of Advent we also celebrate the Memorial of Our Lady of Loreto. The title of Our Lady of Loreto refers to the holy little house in Nazareth in which Mary was born and took place the Annunciation — the Incarnation when the Word became Flesh. Tradition says that a band of angels took the house from the Holy Land and transported it first to Tersato, Dalmatia in 1291, then to Recanati, Italy in 1294, and finally in the 14th century to Loreto, in the Adriatic Sea coast of Italy, where the Shrine of Loreto has been for centuries. On December 9th, we celebrate St. Juan Diego, the indigenous Aztec pagan convert whose encounter with the Virgin Mary in 1531 began the devotion to Our Lady of Guadalupe. Juan Diego was hurrying to Mass to celebrate the Feast of the Immaculate Conception. In the native Aztec dialect, a radiant heavenly woman announced herself as the “ever-perfect holy Mary, who has the honor to be the mother of the true God.” “I am your compassionate Mother, yours and that of all the people that live together in this land,” she continued, “and also of all the other various lineages of men.” She asked Juan Diego to request to the local bishop. “I want very much that they build my sacred little house here” — a house dedicated to her son Jesus Christ, on the site of a former pagan temple, that would show him to all Mexicans and exalt him throughout the world. The Mexico City basilica and the tilma of Juan Diego — the traditional cloak-like garment he was wearing containing the flowers until he had reached the local bishop — has become one of the world's most-visited Catholic shrines.
