In today's reading (Mt 18:15-20), we witness the merging of these two dimensions. Jesus said to His disciples: "Whatever you bind on earth shall be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven. Again, amen, I say to you, if two of you agree on earth about anything for which they are to pray, it shall be granted to them by My heavenly Father. Today, the Universal Church celebrates the Memorial of St. Teresa Benedicta of the Cross (1891-1942), also known as St. Edith Stein. She was born of Jewish parents in 1891 in Breslau (now Wroclaw, Poland), becoming an influential and brilliant philosopher following her extensive studies at major German universities. Edith Stein was captivated by reading the autobiography of Teresa of Avila. She would imitate Teresa by becoming a Discalced Carmelite, taking the name Teresa Benedicta of the Cross. After her conversion to Catholicism, she became a major force in German intellectual life. She was arrested by the Nazi regime in 1942 when she was living in a Carmelite monastery in Echt, Netherlands. Along with all Catholics of Jewish extraction, she was transported by cattle train to the death camp of Auschwitz. Teresa Benedicta and her sister Rosa, also a Catholic, died in a gas chamber in Auschwitz on August 9, 1942. Pope John Paul II beatified Teresa Benedicta in 1987 and canonized her in 1998. In the month of August, we celebrate two martyrs of Auschwitz, St. Maximilian Kolbe, and St. Teresa Benedicta. Today, we celebrate the Memorial Day of St. Dominic of Guzman (1170-1221), who received the Holy Rosary from the Virgin Mary as a means to combat the destructive heresy of the Albigensian in the twelve century. He crushed the heresy and led many souls to piety and to religious life. The Spaniard priest St. Dominic also founded the Order of Preachers —the Dominicans — in the year 1215. At that time, it was an innovative order since instead of manual labor, as practiced by the Cistercian monks, he required his friars to work with their minds by preaching and teaching. Alongside the Franciscans, the Dominicans became the most powerful Order in medieval times, giving the Church illustrious preachers — St. Vincent Ferrer, Sts. Thomas of Aquinas and Pius V, among others— and contributed immeasurably to maintaining the purity of the faith. St. Dominic, to whom popes and saints have consistently attributed the origin and spread of the holy rosary, had a saint mother, Juana de Aza. During pregnancy, Dominic's mother dreamed she was carrying in her womb a little dog that held a burning torch between its teeth; and when she had given birth, it set the whole world on fire. This commemoration anticipates the glory of heaven, where we shall see God face to face. Three witnesses chosen by Jesus — Peter, James, and John — saw in Mount Thabor in Israel that our Lord’s face and clothes become dazzling with light, and Moses and Elijah appear. Moses and Elijah represent the two principal components of the Old Testament: the Law and the Prophets. Moses was the giver of the Law, and Elijah was considered the greatest of the prophets. A cloud covered Him and a voice from heaven said: "This is my Son, my Chosen; listen to Him!" On the mountain, the three core disciples saw the glory of God’s Kingdom shining out of Jesus. They also learn that Jesus himself is the complete Word of God. The Catechism explains that Christ’s Transfiguration aims at strengthening the apostles’ faith in anticipation of his Passion: the ascent onto the 'high mountain' prepares for the ascent to Calvary.
