We celebrate today the memorial day of Our Lady of Snow (la Virgen Blanca, in Spanish), a feast related to the Basilica of St. Mary Major, one of the illustrious churches in Rome. This feast commemorates the miracle of the snowfall that occurred during the night of August 4-5 in the year 358 on the site where the basilica now stands. According to tradition, the Virgin Mary appeared in a dream to two faithful Roman Christians, the patrician John and his wife, as well as to Pope Liberius (352-366), asking that a church be built in her honor on the site where snow would fall on the night of August 4-5. The basilica was completed about a century later by Pope Sixtus III (432-440), after the Council of Ephesus in 431 during which Mary was declared to be the Mother of God. Martha, Mary, and Lazarus — three siblings living in the town of Bethany outside of Jerusalem. Martha generously offered Jesus hospitality, Mary listened attentively to his words and Lazarus promptly emerged from the tomb at the command of the Lord. In this household of Bethany, the Lord Jesus experienced the family spirit and friendship. In the related reading of today (Jn 11:19-27), Christ reminded a critical truth to Martha: "I am the resurrection and the life; whoever believes in me, even if he dies, will live, and anyone who lives and believes in me will never die. After His baptism, for instance, when Jesus was praying the heavens opened and the Holy Spirit descended in the form of a dove. Likewise, it was during prayer at night that the transfiguration took place on Tabor. During the Annunciation, it was while Mary was praying that Gabriel delivered his message, and the Holy Spirit overshadowed her. On Pentecost, a small community of Christians, including the Holy Virgin and the Apostles, were praying for the coming of the Paraclete took place. Today, the same is true at Mass. Today, July 26th, is the Memorial of Saints Joachim and Anne, the parents of the Blessed Virgin Mary, and also the grandparents of Jesus. In the home of Joachim and Anne the Virgin Mary was educated to be the Mother of God. Joachim was a prominent and respected man who had no children, and he and his wife, Anne, looked upon this as a punishment from God. In answer to their prayers, Mary was born and was dedicated to God at a very early age. Our devotion to Anne and Joachim is an extension of our affection toward our Blessed Mother. The couple early became models of Christian marriage. We, too, owe a debt of gratitude to our parents for their help in our Christian formation — as long as they are able to transmit the faith!
