Today, July 25th, is the Feast of St. James, the Apostle, known as Jame the Greater, to distinguish him from the other Apostle St. James, the Lesser. He is one of those that Jesus called Boanerges, "son of thunder." With Peter and John the Evangelist, his brother, he was one of the witnesses of the Transfiguration, as later he was also of the Agony in the Garden. He was beheaded in Jerusalem in the year 42 or 43 A.D. by order of Herod of Agrippa. Jesus foretold this kind of fate when He prophesied that James and his brother John would "drink of the same chalice" of suffering as Himself, as we read in the Gospel today. St. James is the patron saint of Spain and of pilgrims. In northwestern Spain, he is venerated at Santiago de Compostela, a medieval pilgrimage site that is still very popular today. Since the ninth century, Spain has claimed the honor of possessing his relics. The pilgrimage of Camino de Santiago, "the Way of St. James" — has attracted immense crowds. And perseverance in pleading is necessary. It trains us spiritually and makes us more grateful. Also, praying in union with others, being submissive to God's will, has a special efficacy. "If two of you shall agree on earth about anything at all for which they ask, it shall be done for them by My Father in heaven" (Mt 18:19). Lastly, our prayer must be rooted deeply in God's holy will. There is no example more moving and convincing than that of Christ Himself during His agony in the Garden. His Father did not remove the chalice from Him. And yet our Savior's prayer was answered. He was given the strength to drink the chalice of His sorrowful passion. Our prayer should selflessly seek the good of the Kingdom of Heaven. If our prayer serves nothing more than one's own selfish interests, it might never be heard. Becoming a disciple of the Lord Jesus is a tough choice, yet the righteous decision for our soul here on Earth and in Eternity. Christ invites us to put Him at the center of our lives. This doesn't mean that we abandon our families, businesses, identity, or material possessions. All of these things are good but come second. It's a realignment of our existence. In this context, we understand today's shocking reading in Matthew's Gospel (10:34—11:1) when Jesus says: "Do not think that I have come to bring peace upon the earth. I have come to bring not peace but the sword. For I have come to set a man against his father, a daughter against her mother, and a daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law; and one's enemies will be those of his household. "Whoever loves father or mother more than me is not worthy of me, and whoever loves son or daughter more than me is not worthy of me; and whoever does not take up his cross and follow after me is not worthy of me. The origin of the devotion can be traced back to the 12th century when a group of hermits settled on Mount Carmel in present-day Israel. These hermits eventually formed the Carmelite order, dedicating themselves to a life of prayer and contemplation. The scapular, known as the "Brown Scapular of Our Lady of Mount Carmel, became closely associated with this devotion. The faithful often wear the brown scapular as a visible sign of their devotion and an expression of trust in Mary's intercession. According to the Carmelite tradition, the Brown Scapular of Our Lady of Mount Carmel was presented by Our Lady to St. Simon Stock, the then-Father General on July 16, 1251. Our Lady gave St. Simon a scapular for the Carmelites with the following promise, saying: "Receive, My beloved son, this habit of thy order: this shall be to thee and to all Carmelites a privilege, that whosoever dies clothed in this shall never suffer eternal fire… It shall be a sign of salvation, a protection in danger, and a pledge of peace." Many popes and saints have strongly recommended wearing the Brown Scapular to the Catholic Faithful. Pope Pius XII said: "The Scapular is a practice of piety which by its very simplicity is suited to everyone, and has spread widely among the faithful of Christ to their spiritual profit." According to Church tradition, there are three conditions necessary to participate in this Privilege and share in the other spiritual benefits of the Scapular: wear the Brown Scapular, observe chastity according to your state in life, and pray the Rosary. The scapular is a sign which has been approved by the Church for over seven centuries and which stands for the decision to: – Follow Jesus like Mary: – Be open to God and to his will. – Be guided by faith, hope, and love. – To pray at all times. – To discover God present in all that happens around us.
