In today's Sunday reading (Jn 1:19-34), John the Baptist saw Jesus coming toward him and said, "Behold, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world." From ancient times in Old Testament, the lamb was the sacrificed animal that represented the sins of the people. It was an innocent creature sacrificed for God. Jesus Christ the Messiah offered Himself as the eternal lamb to sacrifice out of love for the human race and its sins. The Lamb of God continues to be present in the Eucharist today. Ave Maria! In this Solemnity of the Epiphany Day, we read (Mt 2:1-12) that three Magi from the East, guided from a start at its rising, arrived in Bethlehem of Judea to pay homage and adore the newborn Jesus. They were overjoyed on entering the house and seeing the child with Mary his mother. "They prostrated themselves and did him homage. Then they opened their treasures and offered him gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh. And having been warned in a dream not to return to Herod, they departed for their country by another way." Exactly the same way we offer gold to the Lord to signify that there is nothing more precious than Him. Frankincense to say that only with Him our life can be elevated. In various regions and countries, today is the Solemnity of the Epiphany of Our Lord. In the United States and other places, this solemnity is assigned to this Sunday. On this day, we also reflect on the legacy of Pope Benedict XVI, whose funeral mass was celebrated in St. Peter Square, in Rome, yesterday. Particularly, we'd like to highlight his devotion to the Rosary. He recited it each morning and used to contemplate with Mary the face of Christ. He was buried with his Rosary in hands. In a general audience at St Peter’s Square on May 1, 2006, Pope Benedict XVI said: • "The Rosary is the prayer of the Christian who advances in the pilgrimage of faith, in the following of Jesus, preceded by Mary.” • “We desire to welcome the Virgin’s maternal request, committing ourselves to say the rosary with faith for peace in our families, in countries, and in the whole world.” • “The rosary is a means given by the Virgin for contemplating Jesus and, meditating on his life, for loving and following him always more faithfully.” • “Dear young people, I invite you to value this traditional Marian prayer which helps us to understand better the central moments of salvation realized by Christ. • "Dear sick people, I exhort you to turn with confidence to the Virgin, through this exercise of piety, entrusting all your needs to her." • "Newlyweds, make the praying of the rosary in the family a moment of spiritual growth under the maternal gaze of the Virgin Mary." Today, while we pray for the eternal rest of the soul of Pope Benedict XVI and we enjoy the scenes from the funeral mass in Rome [see it below], we celebrate the Memorial of St. John Nepomucene Neumann, bishop (1811-1860). John Neumann was born in Bohemia (current Czech Republic). While in the seminary he felt the desire to help in the American missions. After coming to the United States he was ordained in New York in 1836. Entering the Congregation of the Most Holy Redeemer (Redemptorists) in 1840, he worked in establishing parishes and parish schools. In 1852 he was consecrated Bishop of Philadelphia and prescribed the Forty Hours devotion. In Rome, he participated in the Proclamation of the Dogma of our Blessed Mother's Immaculate Conception. Bishop Neumann died at 48 years of age. Completely exhausted from all his apostolic endeavors, he collapsed in the street on January 5, 1860. He was beatified in 1963.
