Today, day eleven of Christmas, the universal church celebrates in the USA and Canada the memorial of a New York-born, nineteenth-century saint, Elizabeth Ann Seton (1774-1821). After her husband's death from tuberculosis, she, who was a mother of five children, converted to Catholicism and founded the American Sisters of Charity, a community of teaching sisters which began Catholic schools throughout the United States. She was the first native-born American to be canonized as a saint. She wrote nicely about the Divine Will: “The first end I propose in our daily work is to do the will of God; secondly to do it in the manner He wills; and thirdly, to do it because it is His Will.” “Let His Will of the present moment be the first rule of our daily life and work, with no other desire but for its most full and complete accomplishment. Today is the Feast of St. John Apostle and Evangelist. St. John, the son of Zebedee and brother of St. James the Great, become the beloved disciple of Jesus. He wrote the fourth Gospel, three Epistles, and the Book of the Apocalypse or Revelation. St. John was present with Peter and James at the Transfiguration of Christ and witnessed His agony in the Garden. At the Last Supper, he leaned on the Master's breast. At the foot of the cross, Jesus entrusted His Mother to his care. He was the only one of the Apostles who did not forsake the Savior in the hour of His Passion and Death. John's pure life kept him very close to Jesus and Mary for years to come. St. John described in his Gospel the pre-existence of the Word, who by His Incarnation became the light of the world and the life of our souls. He was later exiled to the Island of Patmos, where he wrote the Apocalypse, but afterward returned to Ephesus to take care of the Holy Virgin. Today is the feast of Saint Stephen, the first martyr of the Church, stoned outside of the city wall of Jerusalem two years after the death of Christ, during the first persecution against the nascent Church. His story of sacrificial love, narrated in the Acts of the Apostles, emphasizes the paralleled with Jesus' trial. He was the first to follow in the steps of Christ with martyrdom. Like the Messiah, the died forgiving and praying for his executioners (cf. Acts 7:60). St. Stephen was "filled with faith and with the Holy Spirit" and "full of grace and strength, and he showed himself as a man of God, radiating divine grace and apostolic zeal. By establishing his feast on the day after Christmas, Holy Mother Church draws a close comparison between the disciple and the Master. We are indicated that to be a witness, an apostle, is to be a martyr, in imitation of Christ. The day of death, the day of martyrdom is the passage to immortal life.
