Over time, the brain becomes physically addictive and starts to develop tolerance. This dependence seriously undermines our behavior. Marriages, family, and friendship relations get damaged. What’s more disturbing is the impact on kids. Questions of sexual identity and moral values arise. Pornography is another tool that the Evil One uses to destroy us. It leads us to a sinful lifestyle, separating ourselves from the beauty of Jesus and Mary. Spiritually speaking, pornography exploits our human tendency toward lust — what Jesus called "adultery in the heart." During six weeks, until the evening of Holy Thursday, believers solemnly observe Lent in imitation of the sacrifice of Jesus in the wilderness. We commit to prayer, almsgiving, fasting, and penance. At this point, why do we do penance? It's not to re-charge batteries or even being more open to God. The primary purpose of doing penance during Lent—and at any other season—is to make reparation for our sins. We freely impose ourselves a small punishment as we feel that we are separating from God. We always should be in holy communion with Jesus, but we often lose this perfect union during the day—as we are sinners. Through penance, we participate in the sacrifice of Christ who takes our sins away. Our Heavenly Father delights in our effort to repair our misdeeds. Yesterday, in John’s Gospel (3:14-21), the Son of the living God revealed to Nicodemus: "The light came into the world, but people preferred darkness to light because their works were evil. For everyone who does wicked things hates the light and does not come toward the light, so that his works might not be exposed." Let’s apply it to our modern society. We still wonder why many stay on sinful lives and to our shocking, they refuse to repent while keeping on attacking the Way to the eternal truth. Simple: they hate the light, so they are able to hide their wicked works as well as their own collaboration with darkness. Jesus Christ will judge them. Sadly, lukewarm Catholics get confused. Restoring the faith in the divinity of Jesus is more necessary now than ever. And, by the way, this is early teaching of the Catholic Church and a dogma confirmed at the Council of Nicea, at the beginning of the fourth century. The Preacher to the Pontifical Household, Cardinal Raniero Cantalamessa, reflected on the divinity of Jesus in his third sermon for Lent 2021 this week. Today, everyone agrees on the humanity of Christ. "What separates believers from non-believers is the belief that Jesus is also God," said Cardinal Cantalamessa. "Christian faith is the divinity of Christ." Life has no meaning until we proclaim that Jesus Christ is the true God. Jesus Christ said: "To love your neighbor as yourself is worth more than all burnt offerings and sacrifices." At this point, when talking about love, we need to be careful, mostly because of the way the secular culture has perverted the term. Truly love represents a participation in the love that God is. We have received as grace the ability to will the good of the other. It's a self-giving attitude. It's moving outside our egotism in the imitation of the infinite mercy of Jesus Christ. The theological virtue of love is not an instinct, sexual impulse, feeling, or an engineered concept against the Christian family. Love is about being charitable.
