Today, we observe the Memorial Day of the Most Holy Name of Mary, inviting everyone to reflect upon all the graces received through the intercession and mediation of the Blessed Mother. This feast originated in Spain in the sixteenth century, in thanksgiving to Our Lady for the battle victory for Christian Europe against the Muslim Turks. The feast of the Holy Name of Mary follows that of her Birthday, as the Feast of the Holy Name of Jesus follows Christmas. In accordance with Jewish custom, Our Lady's parents named her eight days after her birth and were inspired to call her Mary. The Hebrew name of Mary, Miryãm, (in Latin Domina) means lady or sovereign; this Mary is by virtue of her Son's sovereign authority as Lord of the World. We call Mary Our Lady as we call Jesus Our Lord, and when we pronounce her name we affirm her power, implore her aid, and place ourselves under her protection. In this regard, Pope Benedict XVI wrote about the Most Holy Virgin: "If you follow Mary, you will not stray; if you pray to her, you will not despair; if you turn your thoughts to her, you will not err. If she holds you, you will not fall; if she protects you, you need not fear; if she is your guide, you will not tire; if she is gracious to you, you will surely reach your destination." Ave Maria! We honor today St. Teresa of Calcutta (1910-1997), affectionally called "Mother Teresa. This Albanian nun received the Nobel Prize in 1979 and founded in Calcutta, India, the Missionaries of Charity in 1950, established in 30 countries today. St. Teresa of Calcutta (Kolkata) proclaimed God’s thirsting love for humanity, especially for the poorest of the poor. She was a soul filled with the light of Christ, on fire with love for Him and a burning desire “to quench His thirst for love and for souls.” “God still loves the world and He sends you and me to be His love and His compassion to the poor.” She started each day in communion with Jesus in the Eucharist and then went out, rosary in her hand, to find and serve Him in “the unwanted, the unloved, the uncared for.” She was witness to the joy of love, the dignity of every human person, and the value of little things done faithfully and with love. She experienced an interior life marked by moments of deep feeling of being separated from God, even rejected by Him, a “painful night” of her soul. What profit would there be for one to gain the whole world and forfeit his life? Or what can one give in exchange for his life? Today, we are praying the Holy Rosary in San Francisco's Tenderloin district, an area avoided by tourists due to its reputation for drug dealing and violent crime. The Tenderloin is bordered by Geary to the north, Market Street to the south, Taylor Street to the east, and Van Ness to the west. Despite being advised against it, we felt compelled to see firsthand what was happening in this area. We prayed the Joyful Mysteries, asking the Blessed Mother for help and guidance for these poor people, abandoned by society. As you'll observe, we went unnoticed while praying with the Rosary in one hand and a cellphone camera in the other. These individuals are not criminals or dangerous; many are struggling with the effects of fentanyl and other harmful opioids, simply trying to survive while homeless. We recited a heartbreaking Rosary, reflecting on our collective failure to care for our fellow human beings. The homeless and drug addicts in the Tenderloin are enduring an agonizing struggle during their time on earth, suffering an extreme purgatory. We hope and pray that they come first in the Kingdom of Heaven.
