Very often our specific requests to God are not for our good. In that case, the eternal God might not grant what would result in our disadvantage. However, if our prayer is sincere and persevering, we shall always receive an answer — one that is better than what we asked for. We shouldn't doubt God's mercy. Who are we to question God's mercy? The earthly death of our loved one ended up bringing out virtues in us that they would otherwise never have had the occasion to practice. We cultivate these virtues for eternal life. Ave Maria! Today, the Memorial of St. Maximilian Mary Kolbe (1894-1941), Polish priest and martyr, is celebrated by the Universal Church. Maximilian Mary Kolbe founded the Militia of the Immaculate Mary, a movement of Marian consecration that undertook an intense apostolic mission in Europe and Asia. The friars of the Militia of the Immaculate Mary utilized modern printing and administrative techniques to "win the world for the Immaculata". They launched a daily newspaper with a circulation of 230,000, a monthly magazine with a circulation of over one million, and a shortwave radio station. Maximilian was a true "apostle of the mass media" and a ground-breaking theologian. He further developed the Church's understanding of Mary as a "Mediatrix" of all the graces of the Trinity, and as an "Advocate" for God's people. In 1941, the Nazis imprisoned Father Maximilian in the Auschwitz death camp. There he offered his life for another prisoner and was condemned to slow death in a starvation bunker. On August 14, 1941, his impatient captors ended his life with a lethal injection. Pope John Paul II canonized Maximilian as a "martyr of charity" in 1982 and proclaimed him the "Patron Saint of Our Difficult Century." St. Maximilian Kolbe is considered a patron of journalists, families, prisoners, the pro-life movement, and the chemically addicted. They ended up declaring that Jesus was the Messiah, the Chosen of God. Our problem lies in our lack of faith. Christ Jesus conveyed this message to His disciples when they struggled to expel a demon from a possessed boy, as recounted in today's Gospel of Matthew (Mt 17:14-20). He stated: "Amen, I say to you if you have faith the size of a mustard seed, you can say to this mountain, 'Move from here to there,' and it will move. Nothing will be impossible for you." Jesus urges us through His disciples to exercise our faith. St. Paul reminds us that "we walk by faith, not by sight." We observe the world around us through conventional categories—political, cultural, and economic. We might be driven by instinct. However, by nurturing our faith daily, we can reach a point where the beauty of the Spirit predominates in our lives because the Divine will grant us the grace to perceive it. Let's reflect for a second even from a contemporary perspective what Saint Lawrence presented as the "treasures of the Church" to Emperor Valerian when he was summoned before the executioners. He showed up with a handful of crippled, poor, and sick men, and when questioned, replied that 'These are the true wealth of the Church.' (He was immediately sent to his death, being cooked alive on a gridiron.) Christ came to cure the sick — physically and spiritually ill people — and those trapped in sin. In all cases, every one of us is well represented by the sick, the needy, and the marginalized, just like St. Lawrence said. It's critical to separate sin from sinners, be doctrinally pure, and not fall into the traps of darkness. Sadly, some prelates are becoming confused by our contemporary society's attempt to erase the distinction between sin and sinners, not being able to avoid infiltration into the universal church.
