Abstinence from eating meat is observed on Ash Wednesday and all Fridays during Lent. Fasting means that on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday we eat one full meal, as well as two smaller meals that together are not equal to a full meal. Ashes are imposed on the faithful during Mass, after the homily, as a sign of fragility and mortality. It symbolizes the attitude of internal penance to which all the baptized are called, and the need to be redeemed by the mercy of God. The ashes are made from the palms used at the previous Passion Sunday ceremonies. We leave them on our forehead as a witness to our faith. Ave Maria! Our human forces are limited. And the more we exalt ourselves the deepest the fall. St. Peter—the rock anointed by Jesus to build His Church—denied the Master not one but three times. Are we better than Peter — whose feast day we celebrated yesterday? We are not. Only through constant prayer, we can overcome temptation. Grace received from Jesus and Mary will help us to cut off our negative impulses and prevent us from sinking. Let’s continue asking the Father "not to lead us into temptation" as we do six times on every Rosary we pray. Ave Maria! Jesus, I Trust In You! + Mikel A. | TheRosaryNetwork.org, New York

"You are Peter; and upon this rock, I will build my Church, and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it." [Mt. 16, 18] We also celebrate the unity of the universal Church, founded upon the Apostle Peter, and renew our assent to the Magisterium of the Catholic Church. The symbol of the chair emphasizes the authority of St. Peter and the Papacy. Ave Maria! Jesus, I Trust In You! St. Peter, Pray for Us! + Mikel A. | RosaryNetwork.com, New York

To leave everything in the hands of God, we need to first live for God and for others. The rule of discipleship is humbly accepting suffering and following the path of self-sacrificing love. Jesus clearly said: "Whoever wishes to come after me must deny himself, take up his cross, and follow me." This is tough. It requires holiness in our daily lives. If we're serious about Christianity there is no other way. On the other hand, this is the one-single rule to a joyful life. Ave Maria! As Jesus Christ tells us in today Sunday's reading (Lk 6:27-38): "Love your enemies and do good to them and lend expecting nothing back; then your reward will be great and you will be children of the Most High, for he himself is kind to the ungrateful and the wicked. Be merciful, just as your Father is merciful." Isn't this amazing? The Creator of the human race gives us one single rule: be merciful to each other, and He will take care of everything else. Mercy extends to all of the aspects in life: "Stop judging and you will not be judged. Stop condemning and you will not be condemned. Forgive and you will be forgiven." "For the measure with which you measure will in return be measured out to you." Ave Maria! Jesus, I Trust In You! + Mikel A. | TheRosaryNetwork.org, New York
