Therefore, the feast of today is widely recognized as a day for love, devotion, and romance. St. Valentine was a third-century saint and martyr in Rom, who is represented in pictures with birds and roses. The romantic nature of Valentine’s Day may have its origin in the Middle Ages when it was most likely created to overpower the pagan holiday of Lupercalia. The exchange of “valentines” is the result of secular custom, and the celebration has been paganized with cupids and the like. For us, Christians, the love offered is depicted beautifully in the Most Sacred Heart of Jesus, which is a sacrificial, self-less, and unconditional love. In Jn 15:12-13, Jesus said: "This is my commandment: love one another as I have loved you.” St. Valentine fulfilled this command, and may we do the same. Ave Maria! Diversity — properly understood — is great because it means that each soul has been uniquely created. And I must add: uniquely created for the Glory of God — which is our own glory. What isn’t great is to loudly defy the teaching of Christ’s Church — a behavior that some people vividly display. We pray for them, so they can come to the light. As St. Paul explained in Colossians 1:13, "God has delivered us from the domain of darkness and transferred us to the kingdom of His beloved Son." Nothing in this valley of tears would make sense without the Resurrection. The mystery of human life is summarized in the Cross and the Resurrection. Life is eternal, and we model it in imitation of the Son of God who came to earth to suffer with us. Jesus revealed the whole truth of human existence, but in our unrighteousness, we didn’t believe Him. When you suffer a big loss — my wife in my case — it’s the time to decide. St Paul, in the reading today (1 Cor 15:3-8, 11), recounts how Jesus was raised on the third day in accordance to the Scriptures and to how many people He appeared. Ave Maria! Yesterday, I came here to the funeral mass of Maria Blanca’s father, Julián González, who died a year ago. He didn’t have a funeral then due to the Covid pandemic. Julián and her daughter, my holy wife Maria Blanca, were very present in spirit. We are certain that we will resurrect and enjoy then the joy of the love of God. This doesn’t erase our sorrow on Earth, but the virtue and the grace of hope keep us in good spirit. Julián and Maria Blanca moved from this world — very often a valley of tears — to the House of the Father. I believe that they are together in the Communion of Saints, along with millions of souls who truly believed and lived for God. Ave Maria! Moreover, these unfaithful claim to be active defenders of freedom… as long as freedom means not believing in Jesus Christ. Our Savior said on Mark 9:39: "Whoever is not against us is for us." Either we believe in the eternal truth or we don’t. Ideologies and political movements mostly revolve around this duality. We say "mostly" because not everyone in the world has known the Gospel. When the knowledge of The New Testament, the saints, and the Magisterium of the Church arrives into everyone, then people will be compelled to decide what path to take.
