This feast is a reminder of the power of divine love reflected on the sacred marks of suffering Jesus Christ. The stigmata on Francis showed his mystical union with the Cross of Christ. After praying, meditating on the mysteries of the Passion, and fasting for forty days in a solitary retreat, the saint received in his hands, feet, and side the wounds of Jesus. That happened in 1224 in Mount Alverna, in southern Italy. St. Francis was the first person, historically recorded, who bore the five wounds of the crucified Christ. Later, these marks showing the burning love of God would be received by others, for example, Padre Pio of Pietrelcina — whose festivity is celebrated this September 23rd. Ave Maria! For thirty-three years, in Cartagena, Colombia, he cared for the sick and dying slaves. In this Caribbean seaport city of Cartagena, where black slaves were auctioned, Peter Claver met each slave as they arrive, and was bringing them food, water, medicine, and clothing. He brought them Jesus Christ, teaching them that they were loved by God more than they were abused by men. He explained to them that that evil, inhumane treatment outraged the Creator. He offered their only consolation: hope in the promises of God. Through his priestly effort, three hundred thousand souls were baptized at his hands and entered the universal church. Ave Maria! She suffered immense sorrows and after her earthly life was taken body and soul into heaven in the mystery of the Assumption. Through her, as the Spouse of the Holy Spirit and Queen of the Universe, all grace is given to humanity. In Mary all human nature is exalted. We rejoice in her birthday. As they were touching him, they were immediately cured. Another passage narrates how Jesus calmed a storm (Mark 4: 35-41) to the amazement of their own disciples who were afraid to perish on the sea. The apostles were saying to one another: "Who is this, that even the wind and the sea obey him?" These biblical, supernatural miracles are hard to digest for our little minds. In consequence, we pass and look another way. And then our life, due to unbelief, becomes dysfunctional, with sin dominating us. Our faith is our great richness. It highlights our spiritual dimension and connects us with the Logos, the Creator of Life. That's how we are wired — like it or not. Today's culture tries to teach the ideology of self-esteem and self-assertion. That's opposite to the fundamental truth. It simply doesn't work and makes us miserable.
