This twelve-century popular saint, the founder of the Franciscans order, was born and died in Assisi, Umbria, Italy. At the age of twenty, he was taken prisoner in the battle between the Assisians and Perugians. During his imprisonment, he experienced a vision from Christ and decided to abandon everything for the true faith. His father, a wealthy cloth merchant, became extremely displeased at his action and disinherited him. He left all his possessions and embraced complete poverty, taking the Gospel as his rule of life. Out of humility Francis never accepted the priesthood and remained a deacon all his life. He had a great love for God's creatures and called them his brothers and sisters. That’s human freedom at work — for the better or worse. Now, an interesting segmentation, if I may, it’d be like this: people who pray and people who don’t pray. In our confused society, that might be an insightful distinction. Prayer in Christianity means that we submit ourselves to the Father, and we trust in his will. Today, September 24, we celebrate the feast of Our Lady of Mercy. By doing so we honor the origin of the Mercedarians, also known as the order of Our Lady of Mercy or Our Lady of Ransom. During the Middle Ages, this organization freed from Muslims many Christians in captivity who were forced to deny the true faith. The Mercedarians followed the view of its founder, St. Peter Nolasco, who had received the visit of the Blessed Virgin in 1218. He was requested to found an order devoted to the rescue of captives. In five centuries, over half a million slaves were saved from Muslims. Today, the Mercedarians still do incredible work by helping Christians in difficult situations to maintain their faith.
