While praying before a cross, Padre Pio received the gift of the stigmata. St. Padre Pio was a much sought-after spiritual advisor, confessor, and intercessor. Thousands flocked to his monastery of San Giovanni Rotundo, which became a worldwide point of pilgrimage. Padre Pio was reportedly able to bi-locate, levitate, heal by touch, and read souls. Yet despite such notoriety, he would often say, "I only want to be a poor friar who prays." He fervently prayed the Rosary every day. The world around us offers pleasures, money, fame, and recognition. We wouldn’t be conflicted and embrace all of this if we just were material beings. The problem — the joy, I’d say — is that we are souls crafted to meet our Creator. We are hungry for God. And who is God and what is the religion to follow? Her Seven Sorrows were these: the prophecy of Simeon in the temple, the flight into Egypt, the loss of the Child Jesus for three days, meeting Jesus on his way to Calvary, the Crucifixion and Death of Jesus, the body of Jesus being taken from the Cross, and the burial of Jesus. The Holy Virgin lived a spiritual martyrdom on Earth. Now, she is recognized as the Queen of Martyrs. Her silent suffering in complete holiness, as the first and most perfect servant of the Lord, reminds us of the way we must carry our own crosses: in complete obedience and self-giving. This celebration signs the triumph of the Cross, the instrument of our redemption. It's the salvation through Jesus when He was lifted up on the Cross. We identify with Jesus Christ on the Cross. We follow Him by taking our cross by conforming ourselves to the will of the Father, doing penance, exhibiting moral courage, practicing the virtues of patience and perseverance, and self-denying — all of these, fruits of the Sorrowful Mysteries that we pray today. Before and after prayer, we made the Sign of the Cross to keep our mind, heart, body, will, and thoughts aligned with God. Moreover, it signifies that we belong to Christ and we give entirely to Him. Isn't that great? The Holy Queen, our Mother in Heaver, showed her character. To be cured, you need to do something on your side. Naturally, we need to be humble, repent, and persevere in prayer and charity acts. Hey, it seems that we want heavenly favors in exchange for nothing.
