The precursor of the Redeemer was born in a town of Judaea six months before Jesus. Like the Blessed Virgin Mary, he was holy at his birth, born free from the original sin. John was cleansed in the womb of his mother Elizabeth at Mary's visit. The Lord Jesus willed to announce to men His own coming through the Baptist, who filled with the Holy Spirit, would immediately recognize Him. John also represented the Old Covenant and the Law. John the Baptist would preach: "Repent, for the Kingdom of Heaven is at hand." It was the same message that Jesus would later proclaim — as we learn in the third Luminous mystery today. In obedience to Jesus, John baptized Him. Although sinless, Jesus Christ chose to be baptized in order to identify Himself with mankind. We are not puppets or marionettes in the hands of the Eternal Father. In this sense, we are created like angels and archangels. One-third decided to defy God and went into darkness, lead by Lucifer. They fell into the earth to mess with mankind, seeking our eternal damnation. In yesterday's reading (Matthew 7:6, 12–14), Jesus Christ warned that the road that leads to destruction is wide, while the gate to life and salvation is narrow, and "those who find it are few." In other words, few will be saved, few will go to Heaven. That theological view that claims that no one will go to hell – mostly because hell doesn't exist – is wrong, and it ends up confusing people. On our daily Fatima prayer, we rightly say: "Save us from the fires of hell." Many saints, including Francisco and Jacinta, saw it and were horrified. He was beheaded on Tower Hill, London, in 1535, because, as a public servant, he refused to approve King Henry VIII’s divorce and remarriage, and the establishment of the Church of England. As a Catholic martyr, he defended with his life the idea that no lay ruler has jurisdiction over the universal Church of Christ. Her Divine Son humbled Himself into human form and only used His supernatural power in the service of others.
