Peter and Paul. He was martyred on August 10, 258, under the Roman emperor Valerian. At that time, Lawrence was the Catholic Church’s treasurer. His executioners ordered him to bring all the wealth of the Church with him. St. Lawrence showed up with a handful of crippled, poor, and sick men. When he was questioned, he replied: "These are the true wealth of the Church." He was immediately put to death, being cooked alive on a roaster. Today we pray the Rosary from San Diego, California, a city that bears its name from an XV century Spanish Franciscan missionary, Diego de Alcalá. We all are branches of the mystical body of Jesus Christ, and we grow in Him. In Europe, the Old Continent, a great demonstration of fervor, repentance, charity, and culture is the Camino de Santiago, known in English as the Way of St. James. Europe — including the ancestors of Americans — was formed by heading into the cathedral of Santiago de Compostela, in the Northwest of Spain, where Saint James the Apostle is buried. The Way of St. James became a major pilgrimage route of medieval Christianity from the 10th century onwards. Today, The Camino attracts over 200,000 pilgrims each year. Today, we are going to march several kilometers of The Way while we pray together the Holy Rosary. From the entrance in Pamplona to the way out of the city, we follow the route of the scallop shell, the ubiquitous sight along the Camino that serves as a guide for pilgrims. Ave Maria! Knowing this, why do so many people prefer to embrace worldly ideas and practices? It’s difficult to understand why many choose not to be saved. In their pride, they exercise their freedom and adopt an anti-Christian way of life. You try to reason with them and you might only receive insults and offenses. Not surprisingly, they are annoyed with the world at the same time. However, they might repent at any moment. Therefore we need to be patient and continue to be joyful witnesses of Jesus and Mary. I’m in the city, Pamplona, in Spain, when the life of this great Spanish saint dramatically changed. In the year 1521, a cannonball fractured the left leg of Captain Ignatius Loyola. He was wounded at the siege of this city of Pamplona — a town that is part of the Camino. While he was convalescing, Ignatius read about Christ and His saints and thus turned wholly to God. Later, he would found the Society of Jesus, the Jesuits, who'd battle intensively against Protestantism in Europe. They also became the greatest foreign missionaries that the world has known.
