In the reading today (Mk 6:30-34), St Mark the Evangelist described these people "like sheep without a shepherd." They were ordinary, often uncharitable, full of weaknesses, individuals. But Jesus Christ was moved with pity for them. He showed mercy and compassion for them. The Eternal Son of God has not changed. He is the same yesterday, today, and tomorrow. Too often, we are like sheep without a shepherd. We can remember those Galileans; many of them were sinners as we are. Let’s answer the merciful call of Jesus before it’s too late. Ave Maria! It's a preparation day for Sunday, dedicated to Jesus Christ. It's the day of the Resurrection when we attend the Holy Eucharist and pray the Glorious Mysteries. Mary is the preparer, the Daughter of God the Father, the Mother of God the Son, and the Mystical Spouse of the Holy Spirit. The Most Holy Mary draws Christians closer to Jesus. The Holy Spirit descends through the Immaculate Heart of Mary. Today's Joyful Mysteries prepare us to imitate Mary by serving God and finding Jesus. We keep holy this day instead of the Sabbath of the old Jews. We sanctify Saturday in honor of the glorious Virgin Mary who remained faithful and unshaken despite a sword that trespassed her heart — like the prophet Simeon forecasted in the fourth Joyful Mystery. Jesus Christ anticipated to his Apostles that they were "like sheep in the midst of wolves". And warned: "But beware of men, for they will hand you over to courts and scourge you in their synagogues, and you will be led before governors and kings for my sake as a witness before them and the pagans." The Creator of Life, the All-Powerful King of the Universe, would experience Himself what means to defend truth and combat sin and death. He died in the Cross for us. Have times changed given the fact that organized religion is now part of the establishment? The persistence of abortion, euthanasia, sexual immorality, profanation of the Eucharist, anti-family policies, and all kind of offenses against Jesus and Mary, shows that many prelates prefer to please the world instead of promoting heroic holiness among the faithful. The vast majority of believers are fine with that. Given the persecution, should we give up then? The Word, the Body, and Blood, of Jesus Christ, are much more powerful than the enemy. “Whoever endures to the end will be saved," He promised us. In truth, our Christian life is — or should be — a life of continual renewal and conversion. An interior transformation doesn’t come overnight. Instinctively, we might return to our old, unholy past. Everyone gets assaulted with bad thoughts, sometimes consciously, others unconsciously, when sleeping, for example. We cannot give up. Our love for Jesus and Mary and for our neighbors needs to be worked unto perfection. We stay alert for that, by rejecting the empty promises of the world. The third luminous mystery that we pray today — whose fruit is repentance and conversion — shows that this grace is for everyone. The ocean of mercy and hope of Jesus touches every single one of us.
