This upcoming Sunday, May 23rd, the Solemnity of Pentecost will the observed. With the descent of the Holy Spirit sent by Jesus Christ, the Catholic Church will begin its pilgrimage and apostolate on Earth as an institution. Jesus Christ wants to see all of his followers united under one single Church. Yesterday’s reading was clear (John 17:11b-19). He prayed to the Father so "we may be one." Jesus Christ is the vine and we are the branches. Unfortunately, division is the norm today. Heresies, doctrines, interests, lukewarmness, are rampant. We see Bishops against Bishops, mixed messages from Rome, and worldliness. What can we do? Let’s start with our own lives by pursuing unity in our families and communities. Mother Mary will help us. We just need to have the purpose of improving and be devoted to the Virgin Mary and her Holy Rosary. That’s how unity will arrive at us. Ave Maria! It's a holy day of obligation unless your local Bishop has dispensed for attending mass. The Ascension is celebrated on the 40th day after Jesus' resurrection. In addition, this year is the Memorial Day of Our Lady of Fatima and the feast of Our Lady of the Most Blessed Sacrament. This title was given to the Virgin Mary a century a half ago to honor her relationship to the Holy Eucharist. Regarding Fatima, we honor the Marian supernatural apparitions. On May 13, 1917, Our Lady of the Rosary — that's how she'd introduce herself — appeared over the trees of the Cova da Iria, in Portugal, asking to pray for the conversion of sinners. The three shepherd children — Lucia, Jacinta, and Francisco, now saints — witnessed the miracles of Fatima and committed to pray and convince the world to daily recite the Holy Rosary. Ave Maria! This feast has been a national holiday in the U.S. on the second Sunday of May since 1914. However, honoring mothers is a Catholic tradition. We rejoice in having Mary, the Mother of God and our spiritual mother, in the month of Mary. The Creator of the Universe chose to put himself into the hands of a human mother. Since then, every act of mothering brings of the Blessed Virgin Mary. Today, as we congratulate our earthly mothers for the role they play in our lives, let's honor as well our heavenly mother and Queen of the Universe, as we learn in the fifth Glorious Mystery that we pray today. It’s an obvious attack on communist, socialist, and Islamic countries. In our western world, authentic Christianity is in a precarious position. Indoctrination to society carried by enemies of the faith put Christians under siege. Is this a surprise? Not at all. As we read today in the Gospel (John 15:18-21), Jesus said to his disciples: "If the world hates you, realize that it hated me first. If you belonged to the world, the world would love its own." It has been a constant across history. As Our Saviour said, "If they persecuted me, they will also persecute you." As Catholics, we're not in the business of pleasing the world, as many prelates and organizations do. Our mission should be to follow Jesus and Mary, no matter the consequences. Ave Maria! We say them after the fruit of the mysteries. The mercy of Jesus and Mary and their sorrowful passion are intermingled. St. Faustina Kowalska, the apostle of mercy, explained after her private revelations from Jesus Christ, why the Divinity permitted trying and hurtful moments. She wrote: "Strangely, God sometimes allows them, but always in order to manifest or develop virtue in a soul. That’s the reason for trials."
