It could be a temptation, a chronic eye problem, epilepsy, or any other source of real pain. Naturally, he asked repeatedly the Lord to free him from that torture. God provided him a shocking answer — shocking from a human perspective: "My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness." Paul understood it and wrote this: "I am content with weaknesses, insults, hardships, persecutions, and constraints, for the sake of Christ; for when I am weak, then I am strong." This is a mystery that strengthens believers. In our weakness, we find strength. When we acknowledge our weakness and sinful condition and we repent and ask for help, Jesus Christ sends us the Holy Spirit. We feel then empowered and joyful. In the year 64, Emperor Nero — a mad and evil soul who hated the human race and committed suicide at the age of thirty-one — put many Christians to death: by crucifixion, being tied to posts and lit up as human torches, or feeding wild animals in his circus. Peter and Paul were probably among the victims. These "proto-martyrs" of Rome, disciples of the apostles, were a powerful testimony that led to many conversions in the early Roman Church. In the first century, preaching the truth of Jesus Christ met a brutal opposition. Today, when it is not causing killing, it is prompting ideological persecution, as many priests and faithful in the U.S. and Europe suffer. The living God continues rewarding many saints-heroes with the crown of martyrdom. The blood of martyrs has always been the seed of Christianity. Ave Maria! Peter and Paul, we venerate the two apostles and martyrs who are the rock on which the universal Church of Christ is built. St. Peter was buried on the hill of the Vatican, in the place of the Basilica of St. Peter's, Christendom's most famous shrine. After the ascension of Jesus, Peter took the leading role that Christ had entrusted to him. He was Rome’s first bishop, and he died here bound to an inverted cross in the year 67 A.D. He holds the keys of Heaven. St. Paul was beheaded in the Via Ostia on the spot where now stands his basilica. Paul the Apostle didn’t see Jesus during His earthly life, although he was favored with special revelations. He experienced a notorious conversion, becoming the greatest of the early Christian missionaries. His 13 letters set the foundations of the Catholic doctrine.
