The Polish nun St. Faustina Kowalska, the big mistic of the XXth century, wrote a Diary with conversations and visitations from Jesus Christ. The Lord asked St. Faustina Kowalska to paint the vision of his merciful divinity being poured from his Sacred Heart. He also requested for the Divine Mercy Sunday. Jesus issued — and Faustina reflected in her Diary — powerful statements: "Let all mankind recognize my unfathomable mercy." "I pour a whole ocean of graces upon those souls who approach the fount of my mercy." "I'm giving souls the last hope of salvation." "If they will not adore my mercy, they will perish for all eternity." Divine Mercy Sunday is also the day after the culmination of the novena of the Chaplet of Divine Mercy, which started on Good Friday. The Divine Mercy Chaplet is prayed on the Rosary beads. His broken body, with mortal wounds still visible, rests in peace in the grave, while has His soul descended to the dead. We meditate upon his agony and cruel death upon the Cross. The disciples scattered, filled with fear and confusion. The Most Holy Virgin Mary held the body of Jesus in her arms, sharing his sacrifice. Imagine her sorrowful day. Mary kept vigil, faithfully trusting that her Son would rise. Despite the pain, the glorious heart of Blessed Mother was full of hope and joyful expectation. The entire Church is represented in the Sorrowful Mary — la Dolorosa, in Spanish — awaiting the victorious triumph of her Son over death. In the midst of the horror of the Cross, Our Lady of Sorrows allowed the divine gift of hope to grow within her. Mother Mary Pray for Us! Jesus, I trust in You! Today, Mass is not celebrated. We observe Holy Friday as part of the Paschal Triduum preceding Easter Sunday. It coincides with the Jewish observance of Passover. For Catholics, it's a fasting and prayer day. There is no celebration of the Eucharist. In the afternoon, ideally at three o'clock, we attend the celebration of the Lord's Passion, including the Veneration of the Cross. We say the prayer of surrender to the will of the Father in Heaven: "Father, into your hands I commend my spirit (Luke 23:46)". The Father accepted the ultimate sacrifice of His Son's earthly life for the salvation of the world. We gaze upon the crucifixion of Jesus and reflect on His brutal agony and earthly death. We see Jesus’ total surrender as an act of perfect love for the Father — an act into which we are invited to participate. We use this prayer as a way of uniting ourselves with the eternal Son. As we enter into the holiest days of the year, we walk with Jesus Christ in the celebration of the Passover with His disciples, and His prayer and arrest in the Garden of Gethsemane. Tomorrow, Good Friday, we will dwell with Him through the stations of the Cross. On Saturday, we will sit in silent adoration of His tomb as we await the Resurrection while invoking Our Lady of Sorrows. Today, we will hear Jesus’ central message: "I give you a new commandment: Love one another as I have loved you." (John 13:34). We will also reflect on the great mysteries of the Institution of the Most Holy Eucharist — His greatest gift to humanity — and the Agony in the Garden. The institution of Priesthood was established today, too, as Jesus prepared the apostles to be the leaders of His church. How often do we offend and even crucify Jesus Christ? The Jewish Sanhedrin along with the Temple’s priests and the political system condemned to death to the Author of Life and the society of that time either cheered the decision or showed indifference. Even the apostles abandoned Jesus Christ. Only His Mother truly understood the plan of salvation. Our modern society is not that different. Our sins are enormous. Unknowingly, we embrace the lies spread by the Evil One denying Jesus Christ again. Only the prayers and charitable acts of millions of faithful will save the world. Jesus and Mary do listen to these prayers and respond to them. During this Holy Week of the Passion, Death, and Resurrection of the Lord, we recollect ourselves.
